How Meditation Led to My Personal Growth

It was 2012 and I found myself standing on an expansive outdoor stage, gazing out at a packed stadium filled with eager middle school students and proud parents during a graduation ceremony.

As I took a deep breath, the reality of the moment began to settle in.

With their youthful faces looking up at me and aspirations glimmering in their eyes, I carried the pressures of delivering a stirring and motivational speech just before the students were set to embark on the next chapter of their lives.

At the time, I was working with a non-profit dedicated to providing a path forward for first-generation students to gain admission into college. This initiative was particularly important as it aimed to break down the barriers that many of these students faced, including financial constraints, lack of resources, and insufficient guidance in navigating the college application process.

Days before the daunting moment, I had envisioned a performance of the ages, filled with the kind of passion and charisma that would leave the audience breathless.

I practiced my speech in front of my bathroom mirror, meticulously analyzing every gesture and intonation, ensuring I conveyed my message with clarity and confidence.

I imagined myself captivating everyone in the stadium, wowing them with a scintillating, inspirational, and powerful speech and creating an unforgettable moment that would etch itself in their memories forever.

Fast forward to the actual moment and I was a nervous wreck, my hands trembling and my heart racing; seemingly drowning in the immense pressures of delivering a game-changing speech that would inspire and motivate students.

Lucky for me, I had discovered a powerful tool: meditation.

Amidst the chaos, this beautiful and ancient practice had always brought me tranquility and allowed me to tap into a deeper sense of self-awareness and clarity during the most chaotic times.

And this moment was no different.

Just before stepping onto the podium, I closed my eyes, relaxed, and focused on my breath. I began to notice positive shifts in my mental well-being and an increased focus. The gentle rhythms of my breath served as an ultimate guide, reminding me to stay present and appreciate the beauty of each passing moment.

“Breathe in and Breathe Out,” I told myself. “Focus on the sensation of your breath. Use the nervousness. Use the energy. Focus on delivering the message.”

As I approached the stage, the nerves were still present, but because of the meditative session earlier, I also felt a strong sense of calm, confidence, and stability.

The quiet moments I had spent focusing on my breath had created a mental buffer against the anxiety that threatened to overwhelm me, allowing me to find strength in the stillness.

This mingling of excitement and trepidation reminded me of the countless hours I had dedicated to preparation, rehearsing every line and refining my delivery. With each step forward, I embraced the moment, channeling my nerves into a fierce determination to deliver my message with authenticity and passion.

The gray cloud that had covered my mind with doubt and anxiety had begun to dissipate. And I was feeling more and more calm and powerful.

The Moment Had Arrived

With a renewed and focused mind, I gently adjusted the microphone, gazed at the crowd filled with eager faces, and took a deep breath before delivering one of the most passionate and inspirational speeches I had ever presented.

I implored students to storm past their challenges, seize their dreams, and ruthlessly go after their academic goals, reminding them that every obstacle they faced was merely a stepping stone towards their ultimate success.

It was another defining moment in my life. I had risen past a robust challenge that had once seemed insurmountable, and in the process, sharpened my ability to derive comfortability from uncomfortability, transforming my perception of adversity into an opportunity for growth.

Meditation Continues to Guide Me

Through meditation, I’ve continued to learn how to be resilient and embrace discomfort as a necessary precursor to personal development; opening avenues to new experiences that would have previously intimidated me.

Even till this day, meditation continues to flow through the natural rhythm of my day: Before speaking in front of others. When running. When playing soccer, basketball, and tennis. When participating in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). When being part of difficult conversations. Before flying (when my anxiety is through the roof). When producing music. When having to address colleagues at work.

Meditation is at the core of all these activities, giving me the capacity to be more present and providing a calmness that sets the tone for every beautiful experience.

This is not to say that meditation is a panacea for every difficult moment. At times, my anxiety overwhelms and neutralizes my ability to be the best version of myself. I often beat myself up mentally after these events.

But meditation is the tool that helps bring me back, acting as the ultimate cheerleader when self-doubt torments my mind, blinds me, and tries to thwart my progress.

So if you ever find yourself in a difficult situation or challenge and it seems insurmountable. Try to calm your mind. Breathe. Embrace the ambiguity. And realize that your thoughts do not define you. What ultimately matters is how you respond to adversity.

Final Thoughts

In moments of true difficulties, I’ve learned it’s important to remember that challenges are all a part of life’s journey, shaping our character and resilience while offering valuable lessons along the way.

Each obstacle presents an opportunity to grow and discover our true potential, reminding us that we can overcome our difficulties and emerge stronger.

When faced with an unyielding challenge, I urge everyone to try to take a step back, center yourself, take a deep breath, focus on the present moment, and embrace the uncertainty.

Remember, your thoughts don’t truly represent you. It’s your inner strength, resilience, and ability to navigate through challenges that are at the heart of your character.
